Spirit needs 7,000 to beat the baliffs and stay in business after a court
refused to allow
him more time to pay legal fees incurred when he tried to fight his
landlords evicting him.
He has already paid off 28,000 in arrears after his
landlords raised his rent by 700% and backdated the increase.
Spirit has been living and working at 71 Broadway Market since 1993. The
building was
derelict when he moved in and he spent thousands of pounds
and 6 years of his own labour to restore the building to use.
In 2003 Hackney Council sold off loads of its property and put the premises
up for sale  -
So Spirit tried to buy his shop and home.
Despite signing a contract of sale, putting a deposit down and offering to
pay a higher
price for the building than Hackney Council sold his Broadway Market store
at auction to
a Bahamas-based property speculator. His cheque was returned without
explanation.
The new landlords then proceeded to raise his rent by an exorbitant amount.

The costs Spirit must now pay result from him contesting a 2005 possession
order in his
fight for his shop and home at a time when he had no legal representation.
Spirit is taking Hackney Council to court over the sale of his premises. As
a
long-term lease holder he had first option to buy his home and
shop under the Councils own rules.
Bailiffs are now authorized to come and EVICT Spirit from his shop. With
your help we can STOP them!
