Hackney IWCA (Hackney Independent as of summer 2004) joins parents' fight against closure

The vote giving Labour full control of the council has only just been counted and already the community is paying the price. On 14th May, a packed meeting of parents was told that Laburnum School was under threat.

You can't see this on its own. In the surrounding area the Council already plans to re-develop Kingsland estate with more private flats and fewer council homes, while New Deal officers want to convert the top floors of Haggerston Pool into private appartments. Laburnum School, a Victorian building with a playground backing onto the canal, is another prime site for yuppie flats. Now the Council has added it to their list of targets.

Labour will claim that no decision has been made, and that the building won't be sold for housing - but why should we trust them? While we wait to be consulted, they can get on with their plans unopposed.

Laburnum School parents have set up a committee to campaign to save their school, but they need our support. The community saved Burbage School last year. This year we need to organise to save Laburnum.

Labour is going to spend the first part of its 4-year term trying to push through cuts and closures. Let's make sure Laburnum School isn't one of them.
